Last week, I had the honour of being invited to Hwa Chong Institution as one of the judges for their Mandarin songwriting and singing competition. It was a meaningful experience, not only because I got to witness fresh musical talent, but also because I saw some familiar faces, students I’ve come across in other competitions, continuing to hone their craft and grow in confidence.
As a singer-songwriter myself, I always appreciate the courage it takes to put your original work out into the world. It’s not just about performing but it’s about being vulnerable, expressing your thoughts and emotions through music, and connecting with others through your art. Throughout the evening, I was impressed by the level of thought the students put into their compositions. Some explored themes of identity and self-reflection, while others chose to celebrate friendship, family, or the little moments in life. It reminded me of how powerful songwriting can be, especially when it comes from a place of authenticity. Events like these are so important in nurturing young voices and giving them the space to explore, make mistakes, and grow. I’m grateful to Hwa Chong Institution for including me in this journey, and I’m excited to see where these young songwriters go from here. Keep writing, keep singing, and keep believing in your stories. Cheers, Si Tong |
